Behind the Scenes

As the Creative Director behind “Captivated“, I helped scout the location of our outside shoot and helped to direct the look and feel of our collection’s photos and fashion film.

Not only do I have the privilege of sharing the vision that the designer and I both have, but I get to put the finishing touches on a collection that I’ve been working with intimately for the past several months as Editor and Writer.

Outdoor fashion photo shoots are notoriously long, tiresome, and exhausting. While ours involved trekking through forested mountains and ravines, and shooting in inclement weather, we could not have had a better time with our cozy team of six.

Because of Psalms, Sally, David, Ashley and I are used to keeping a positive outlook in even the most dire circumstances, seasoned with a history of fashion events under our belts. But we received nothing less from our model, Georgina, and photographer, Elliot Suhr. Georgina was all energy and enthusiasm from the moment she stepped in for wardrobe fittings until the last shot under the wind and rain. And Elliot held a quiet calm the entire time, pensive and focused, subtly reeling the whole team together.

On a low budget, we wrangled together like a clan, bursting out in tunes, eating hot pizza in the car while in transit, and making a road trip-like day out of it all. As Creative Director on this low budget shoot, I also multi-tasked as driver, photographer + model assistant, and makeup toucher-upper – but I could not have a had a better first go of  it and would never have it any other way.

I delight in our low-budget, in the make-shift craft services out of the trunk of our van, and in the way the members of our team genuinely care and serve each other. There may come a day where a Psalms photo shoot requires the hands of 20 people but right now I’m thankful for this small team, this band of brothers and sisters, and I delight in our small struggles together.

In the middle of huge hill. ‘Where didn’t we shoot?’ would be a better question for the day.
